If you’re considering home recording as a way to make money, you need to also consider the quality of equipment you’ll need. This will be different for each home recording studio you work in. For instance, if you work in an office, you might not need or want the same high-tech equipment that you do in a church or recording school. But no matter where you work, you should keep the following things in mind.
First, you want to think – about the different types of instruments you will be using. Some home recording studios bundle all their instruments together, but that’s not always a good idea. Sometimes it’s more useful to have separate units. And even though some packages come with a variety of different microphones, it can still be helpful to have one or two. So keep that in mind when you’re shopping for a great home recording studio bundle.
Second, think about – how much you plan on using your home recording studio packages. Some come with headphones, so you don’t need them if you aren’t going to be recording with them. Other packages only have mikes, which you won’t need if you’re just recording podcasts. The latter is a great thing to get started with because it allows you to record in a comfortable environment without worrying about getting noises in your ears. You can always buy a set of headphones later.
Next, look at the bundle as a whole – While the quality of the components is important, don’t neglect the way they connect to each other. Are the wires long enough? Does the package offer a plug cutter so that you can put your soundboards up against the walls to save room?
In addition, you should also keep an eye – out for whether the package offers a shock mount or not. A shock mount is a handy little accessory that enables you to hang the microphone package off of the wall while working out. This is especially convenient if you are playing live gigs or recording from different locations, but never intend to bring the mic package down to your room. I’ve had friends who were concerned about damaging their equipment by keeping the cables and equipment out of their room when they weren’t using them, so I think this is a great investment.
Last but not least – don’t forget to check out whether the package includes a pop filter. Having a pop filter gives your recordings a bit more depth and goes a long way towards stabilizing your voice. If you aren’t planning on recording with the actual microphone, then it wouldn’t matter as much.
However, if you are planning on recording vocals or instrumentals, then a cable/mount combo package is probably a better option overall, saving room for all your cables.
